Since he exploded onto the Chicago scene in the early 90’s, Paul Johnson has been one of the most impressive and prolific house producers of the Windy City. He still produces but it’s the consistency of his raw, soulful output of the mid 90’s that impresses most today, particularly his excellent ’96 album for Peacefrog.

Hear The Music is one of that record’s undoubted highlights. The looped vocals, funky bass riff and pacy rhythm all gesture towards pure euphoria, but there’s a tinge of melancholy to the key motif. According to Johnson, this was the track that inspired Daft Punk to start making house music – no small legacy. Twenty years on, this one’s an ageless pleasure.
