Romare’s album on Ninja Tune last year didn’t quite live up to our expectations, but some of his earlier works are still utterly singular. One that’s always particularly captivated us is the two-minute outro to his second EP, a seedy slice of jazz-infused hip hop that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve. It leads with a slow, dusty beat and a bluesy piano riff, complemented by Nina Simone’s gentle croon. There’s an intoxicating humidity to the piece, especially when a raunchy trumpet enters midway through. It may be cruelly short, but Hey Now serves as both a striking set opener and a stellar stand-alone cut.
