Todd Modes, one of the lesser-known lights of the Detroit house scene, resurfaced late last year with an EP on the consistently excellent FIT Sound label. The Native Visions 12″ bears titles referencing Greek myths and trance states, which gives a hint at how the music sounds – earthy, mysterious and consuming.

Our top pick of the package was A2 cut Knossos, whose name comes from the site where King Minos built his palace and the labyrinth which housed the Minotaur. The track wafts into earshot with a smoky sax figure courtesy of Mike Mumford, before breaking into a gravelly low-end shuffle. The percussion picks up pace alongside subtle synth accents and vocal snips before dissipating into a long, evocative breakdown. House music rarely sounds so intoxicating, so devotional.
